The History of Islam in Åland Islands

The presence of Islam in Åland dates back to the Viking era where historical records show the presence of Muslim traders and merchants coming mainly from Muslim Spain and the Mediterranean area.

Åland Museum holds in its collections rare Islamic coins found in Hammarland, also considerable amounts of Muslim silver coins were found in many parts of Åland.

Åland has also old graveyard for those muslims who died building Bomarsund fortress during the Russian presense here.

One of Åland's most distinguished scholars, George August Wallin, who was born in Sund and later became a great explorer and orientalist converted to Islam in 1840s after visiting Arabia, he died in 1851 and was buried according to Islamic traditions in Helsinki.

By the beginning of the 1970s few Muslims came to Åland to work and in 1995 an Ålander became the first woman in the history of Åland to convert to Islam.

Nowadays a small community of Muslims lives in this great place contributing greatly to its prosperity and sharing with the natives their hopes and visions for better future to come.

Islam, The True Religion:

Mankind and the universe were not created by accident or chance, but according to the plan of the Creator, who is known as Allah ( the one and the only God) in Islam. The qur'an states that it is the duty of all individuals to learn about Allah and to live according to His will. As we cannot accomplish this be ourselves, Allah has sent messengers and prophets to guide humanity All of these chosen individuals have brought the same message and have served as examples to their people of how Allah desires all human beings to live. Through these selected people, we have been told why mankind was created, what will happen to us after death, and what Allah expects of us. But most importantly, we have been told that Allah is unique-He has no partners, no sons or daughters, and no competitors, as so many other man-made religious systems have postulated. This message always remains the same, whereas the laws laid down for a particular might show some slight differences. Prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him ), the last of Allah's prophets, was sent to present Allah's revelation in its final form and for the last time. This was necessary because the message delivered by the previous prophets and messengers had been corrupted or distorted by their followers. They had been mixed with philosophical speculations, superstitions, myths, and neglect. Therefore, Islam is not a new religion-it is a restatement of the original religion of Allah in its purest form and is designed to provide humanity with the uncorrupted message of Allah, this message was revealed to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him ) through the Noble Quran. Islam is an Arabic word that denotes submission and obedience to Allah. It also means "peace," for it brings peace of mind and soul as well as peace on the individual and the social levels.

Prophet Muhammad ( pbuh )

Muhammad  was born in Makkah in the year 570.  Since his father died before his birth and his mother died shortly thereafter, he was raised by his uncle who was from the respected tribe of Quraysh.  He was raised illiterate, unable to read or write, and remained so till his death.  His people, before his mission as a prophet, were ignorant of science and most of them were illiterate.  As he grew up, he became known to be truthful, honest, trustworthy, generous, and sincere.  He was so trustworthy that they called him the Trustworthy.1  Muhammad  was very religious, and he had long detested the decadence and idolatry of his society.

At the age of forty, Muhammad  received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel.  The revelations continued for twenty-three years, and they are collectively known as the Quran.

As soon as he began to recite the Quran and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered persecution from unbelievers.  The persecution grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate.  This emigration from Makkah to the city of Madinah, some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar.

After several years, Muhammad  and his followers were able to return to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies.  Before Muhammad  died, at the age of sixty-three, the greater part of the Arabian Peninsula had become Muslim, and within a century of his death, Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China.  Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the truth and clarity of its doctrine.  Islam calls for faith in only one God, Who is the only one worthy of worship.

The Prophet Muhammad  was a perfect example of an honest, just, merciful, compassionate, truthful, and brave human being.  Though he was a man, he was far removed from all evil characteristics and strove solely for the sake of God and His reward in the Hereafter.  Moreover, in all his actions and dealings, he was ever mindful and fearful of God.
